Cool History: Amelia Earhart Lands in Bangor

Ameila Earhart (2nd from Right)

Summer 1934: Bangor´s Godfrey Field was still in its infancy when it was graced with the presence of a pioneer in aviation, Amelia Earhart. Just two years earlier, in 1932, Ms. Earhart was the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean piloting an aircraft.

Not long after this photo was taken, Ms. Earhart successfully completed her trans-Pacific flight from Hawaii to Oakland, California, showing again her remarkable courage and determination.

More recently, in 1998, while cleaning out old files from a basement in Bangor Hydro´s facilities, this photo was discovered in records belonging to the first president of Bangor Hydro, Mr. Edward Graham. Ameila close up
