Electricity
and the Environment
|
|
Every
year someone comes up with a new idea that uses electricity... like
new computerized appliances, rechargeable devices, and other gizmos.
Electric companies and everyday people know how important it is to get
the most out of every watt of electricity, that is, to use it efficiently.
Why?
To save money, improve our way of life, and to protect the environment.
Billions of dollars are spent each year to make rivers and land clean,
and
keep them that way. Here are a few examples of what is being done.
- Emission Controls. Power plants are using modern scrubbers
and special filters to reduce emissions and pollutants.
- Cleaner Burning Technologies. These allow a more efficient
way to produce energy
with lower emissions.
- Environmental Management. Many utilities operate and
sponsor
programs that protect our lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands, etc. that
are homes to our wildlife and fisheries.
- Energy Efficient Programs. Many utilities provide information
to its
customers to better manage their electricity use in turn allowing
the
utility to better manage demand reducing emissions.
