How
is Electricity Provided to Your Home?
|
|
There
are four steps to deliver electricity to your home or business.
- Once
the electricity is produced
at the power plant, it passes
through to large transformers which "step up" or increase the voltage.
This will allow the electricity to travel greater distances.
- Electricity then enters the transmission system. The system
consists
of high voltage lines and towers that spread from the east coast to
the west coast. You can think of it as the main trunk of a tree.
- Substation transformers "step down" the voltage.
This allows local distribution of electricity to various communities
and neighborhoods. The distribution system is much like the smaller
branches of the tree which grow from the trunk.
- Pole transformers step down the voltage once again to your
home or business for the many uses we are familiar with. Using the
example of the tree, the leaves are the final point of delivery
(transformer) to your home or business.
