Bangor Hydro Electric Company

In an effort to support economic development efforts in Maine, specifically those associated with the Maine Pine Tree Zone program, Bangor Hydro Electric has established a special rate for businesses in Pine Tree economic development zones. The Tariff for Optional Targeted Service Rate: Pine Tree Zone Rider was approved by the Maine Public Utilities Commission on September 9th, 2005. This Pine Tree Zone Rate gives qualified businesses in Bangor Hydro’s service territory discounts of 1.5 cents per kWh in the first year, 1.0 cents per kWh the second, and 0.5 cents per kWh in the third year. The program currently has a sunset date of December 31st, 2008. Attached please find the tariff and form contract (word | pdf) for the program.

The high points for both customers and economic development professionals to note are:

  • The business must be located in a Pine Tree Zone, and certified by the DECD as Pine Tree Zone qualified.
  • The business must be new or if existing, must increase electrical load by at least 10%.
  • The business must request the rate from Bangor Hydro in writing, accompanied by a copy of its Pine Tree Zone Certificate of Qualification from the DECD.
  • A Simple form contract is required (see attached).
  • The discounts of 1.5 cents per kWh in Year 1, 1 cent per kWh in Year 2 and 0.5 cents per kWh in Year 3 are paid automatically by Bangor Hydro Electric after filing of the contract with the MPUC on a quarterly basis in the form of a rebate to the customer’s electric bill.
